South Pittsburg is First City in Tennessee to Provide
Free High-Speed South Pittsburg, TN, July 25, 2007: The City of South Pittsburg, Tennessee, in partnership with Trinity Communications, LLC., announces the completion and activation of the City’s open Wi-Fi system, giving it the distinction of being the first city in Tennessee to achieve municipal Wi-Fi. Nationwide there are now over 400 cities that offer Wi-Fi, but South Pittsburg is one of only a few in the nation to offer this service free of charge. Mayor Mike Killian is thrilled for the City of South Pittsburg to be on the cutting edge of technology in both the State of Tennessee and the United States of America. He notes the following benefits: Improved quality of technological life for all citizens; Enhanced access to the internet for police and emergency services from their vehicles; Increased opportunity for access to information for low-income citizens; and the promotion of business and tourism. The Mayor also says that the free Wi-Fi service is part of the five-year plan for Marion County under the State’s Three Star Program. His dream is to see Tennessee the first State in the United States to have free Wi-Fi coverage. The Board of Mayor and Commissioners had intended to use a grant to achieve this service, but found too many restrictions. In forming a public-private partnership with Trinity Communications, a locally owned cable television, phone service and internet service provider (www.trinitycable.com), the City was able to benefit from an operational Wi-Fi system sooner and provide more features and capacity. |
